Good Morning,

Getting fit over 40 doesn’t have to mean that we have to take part in a regimen of exercises. I mean, I don’t know about you, but the actual art of exercising doesn’t do a thing for me.

But, what does work for me is to become active. I love that. According to one Prevention Magazine article if we start to move instead of remaining as motionless as possible, we can lose up to 40 pounds a year.  And if you are the fidgety type of person, don’t stop, every little move helps.  Unless of course you are in church or the opera, that’s not a good place to fidget or move around.   So here are a few tips I have taken to heart.

Get moving;  no more sitting around like a rock or standing around like a planted tree.1 - While you are still in bed, or, even at the end of a busy day, when you are stretched on the couch watching your favorite show do a crunch. Lift your legs to your chest about 20-50 times. Then you don’t even have to feel guilty lying there.2 -  If you can stand instead of sit, do that. For instance, when you are in a park with your kids…stand, or even roam a circle around your kid, but don’t sit on the bench.

3 - Or do like a friend of mine, on a nice day, get off a few bus stops before your destination. It’s a great way to start the day, invigorating, blood moving.And it can get your brain in gear.

4 - Of course there is the old standby, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator! I do that already, but only because I am afraid of elevators.

5  - Waiting for a meal to cook? Or a kettle to boil? Get moving! Don’t just stand there; dance or do some other kind of exercise instead. Remember, make use of the time you are doing nothing and do something instead.

6 - And my very favorite. DANCE. Yes, dance while you dress. Turn on the music in the morning, and, get up a little earlier, and start dancing your morning routine. Get your kids involved.

- Dance while making breakfast
- Dance up and down the stairs (safely, of course)
- Dance while getting dressed…well, you get the idea, right.

And, this dancing routine will actually put you in a good mood to start the day. It will give you bonding moments with your kids too. I mean, can you really be grumpy, nit picky while dancing to your favorite tune?

If you become aware of what your body is doing and start to move then you will see how much better you will feel. To start with, more energetic because your oxygen level is getting to your poor starved cells.
