Low fat dairy is linked to better blood pressure. Dairy, because of it’s calcium, has been linked to getting rid of the fat you eat, instead of absorbing it into the system. Those who include low fat dairy with their meals will get rid of more fat in their waste than if they leave low fat dairy out of their diets. This also means… BETTER WEIGHT LOSS!

Key Facts About Seasonal Influenza (Flu)

What is Influenza (Also Called Flu)?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu;
  • more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and;
  • about 36,000 people die from flu.

Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.

Ways to cut back on bad cholesterolWomen are more likely than men to have dangerously high cholesterol levels. (How true, my hubby had 3.5 and I had 9 in CDN measurements). Woman’s Day gives us some tips to get our numbers under control

• Eat 5 to 10 grams of soluble fiber daily. This can lower cholesterol 3% to 5%. This type of fiber binds to cholesterol so when it leaves your body the cholesterol does, too. Good sources include oatmeal, beans, apples, citrus fruits, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and carrots.

• Have 2 grams of plant sterols or stanols daily. This can lower cholesterol 5% to 15%. These plant compounds prevent your small intestine from absorbing cholesterol. You can find them in margarines such as Benecol and Take Control, and in fortified orange juice labeled as cholesterol-lowering.• Take three 10-minute walks daily. This can lower cholesterol 7% to 18%. Research shows that women who were on a diet and exercise program that included a 30-minute daily aerobic workout lowered their total cholesterol by 7% to 18%. If you don’t have 30 minutes, breaking it up into three 10-minute blocks is just as effective.

• Eat a handful of nuts daily. This can lower cholesterol up to 12%. Walnuts, pistachios, almonds and macadamia nuts may lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides and raise HDL (high-density lipoprotein), probably because they contain healthy monounsaturated fats. Make sure they’re raw and unsalted and figure them into your daily calorie count.

Woman’s Day

Wow, by the time we do these 4 things our cholesterol could very well be in the negative numbers :)

Now This Is An Assortment Of Carbohydrates And Sugars! Carbohydrates and Sugars

Carbohydrates are one of three basic macronutrients needed to sustain life (the other two are proteins and fats). They are found in a wide range of foods that bring a variety of other important nutrients to the diet, such as vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Fruits, vegetables, grain foods, and many dairy products naturally contain carbohydrates in varying amounts, including sugars, which are a type of carbohydrate that can add taste appeal to a nutritious diet.

Carbohydrate Classification

Carbohydrates encompass a broad range of sugars, starches, and fiber. The basic building block of a carbohydrate is a simple union of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The chemical definition of a carbohydrate is any compound containing these three elements and having twice as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen and carbon.

Sugars in Foods

When people hear the word “sugar” they often think of the familiar sweetener in the sugar bowl. That sugar is sucrose and is the most familiar form of sugar to home bakers. But there are many types of sugars, which scientists classify according to their chemical structure.

When I started my resistance-exercise program about 1 month ago my biggest problem was breathing. Problem was when I thought about my breathing hyperventilated and when I didn’t think about it, I ran out of breath. So, to learn your own breathing pattern is very important. Remember, always talk to a professional…if you can afford it, get yourself a personal trainer!

Breathing and Exercise

- breathing is just as important for your health as the exercise itself
- do not hold your breath while exercising
- you should not be short of breath or gasping for breath during exercise
- you can actually train yourself to breathe in different ways
- brief meditation and breathing techniques before and after exercise can improve your results
- be aware of your breathing both at rest and during exercise to help know when you’ve reached your physical limit and need to cool down
- breathing puts oxygen into our blood and tissues
- proper breathing techniques during exercise will prevent getting that exhausted feeling and increase the amount of time you are able to continue the strenuous activity
- breathe a 3:2 inhale-to-exhale ratio; full inhales and full exhales. This means you inhale on the left, right, left foot strikes and exhale fully on the right, left foot strikes.
- always exhale on exertion during exercises, lifting, pushing, or pulling
- oxygen + water = you burning away fat
- focus on breathing during exercise helps maintain a rhythm
